Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust

Kingston is a district general on the Thames: smaller, friendlier, and the kind of hospital where consultants remember your name.

About this hospital

Kingston Hospital is a district general hospital in Kingston upon Thames, south-west London, serving Kingston, Richmond, and parts of Surrey. Since November 2024 it has been part of Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust, formed by merger with Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust. Bed count TK (published figures vary between 371 and over 400); catchment population and annual admissions TK. The hospital handles general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and emergency medicine. Teaching affiliations with St George's, University of London and Kingston University. Maternity and orthopaedic surgery are long-standing strengths.

What it's like as a student here

The pace is steadier than a central London teaching hospital, which can be a feature rather than a bug. You'll be fewer students per consultant, which typically means more time in clinic, more time in theatre, and more opportunities to present on rounds. General surgery and orthopaedic firms run regular theatre lists and students can scrub most days if they arrange it the day before. The emergency department is busy but manageable and a good place to build core skills: taking clerking histories, presenting to the registrar, writing up notes. Obstetrics delivers several thousand babies a year and the labour ward is small enough that students get to be present for most deliveries during a placement. Ward rounds start around 8am on most firms. Teaching culture is warm; consultants at DGHs often teach more than their tertiary centre counterparts because there are fewer specialist registrars competing for their time.

Notable specialties

  • Obstetrics and gynaecology: busy labour ward, strong midwifery team (around 4,500 to 5,800 deliveries per year; most recent published figure 4,536 in 2021).
  • Orthopaedics: elective and trauma lists, fracture clinic daily.
  • General surgery: elective and emergency; laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendicectomy routine.
  • Emergency medicine: mid-volume ED, good for core clerking skills.
  • Paediatrics: inpatient ward and paediatric A&E.
  • Care of the elderly: strong orthogeriatric service tied to the trauma pathway.
  • Anaesthetics: theatre exposure available for students interested.

Location & vibe

Kingston upon Thames is green, riverside, and distinctly suburban. The Thames runs through the town and there are parks, cafes, and independent shops. Richmond Park, one of London's largest green spaces, is a 20-minute walk. Students usually live in Kingston, Norbiton, or Surbiton; rents are more affordable than central London. South Western Railway runs from Kingston and Norbiton to Waterloo in 25 to 30 minutes, but this is a train commute, not a Tube one, and evening and weekend frequencies are lower.

Who does well here

Students who want hands-on time with consultants and registrars and the chance to be present for more of the cases on their firm. Strong fit for students focused on general surgery, orthopaedics, O&G, paediatrics, or emergency medicine who want room to participate rather than observe.

One honest caveat

The site is compact and signage is patchy; your first couple of days will involve asking for directions.
