About this hospital

King's College Hospital sits at Denmark Hill in south London and is part of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. It is one of London's four major trauma centres (serving south-east London) and a national specialist centre for liver disease and transplantation, running the largest liver transplant programme in Europe. Affiliated with King's College London, so the hospital is a teaching site with medical students, research activity, and academic clinicians across most departments. Bed count, staff, and annual admissions TK. The hospital also houses a large haematology service and a hyperacute stroke unit.

What it's like as a student here

The Liver Institute here is something of a destination rotation: students from across Europe come specifically for hepatology exposure. Expect to see acute liver failure, decompensated cirrhosis, variceal bleeding, and the transplant assessment clinic all in the same week. Trauma firms are high-volume and often high-acuity; the emergency department sees penetrating injury and major blunt trauma, and the trauma call culture is active. Neurosurgery runs cranial and spinal lists daily. Ward rounds tend to start around 8am on surgical firms and 8.30am on medical. The teaching culture is strong but informal; students who turn up, ask questions, and stick with their team get good exposure. MDT meetings are a weekly fixture and students are welcome to sit in. The canteen and coffee spots around Denmark Hill station are where most of the informal teaching happens.

Notable specialties

  • Hepatology and liver transplant: the largest liver transplant programme in Europe; national referral centre.
  • Major trauma: adult MTC for south-east London, with blast injury and penetrating trauma exposure.
  • Neurosurgery: cranial tumour, vascular, and spinal lists; on-site neuro-ITU.
  • Haematology: acute leukaemia, sickle cell service (one of the largest in Europe), stem cell transplant.
  • Emergency medicine: high-volume, high-acuity ED; paediatric ED co-located.
  • Stroke: hyperacute stroke centre with thrombectomy service.
  • General surgery: upper GI, colorectal, and HPB teams with links to the liver service.
  • Diabetes and endocrine: specialist diabetic foot MDT on-site.

Location & vibe

Denmark Hill is south-east London: less polished than Bloomsbury or Chelsea, more lived-in than central. Camberwell and Peckham are nearby and both have strong food scenes and affordable rents by London standards. Denmark Hill station is directly opposite the hospital with Thameslink and Southern services into central London in 10 to 15 minutes. No Tube station here, which catches some students out; the overground and trains are reliable but less frequent in the evenings.

Who does well here

Students interested in hepatology, trauma, neurosurgery, or haematology, and students who thrive in a high-volume teaching environment. If you want a quieter placement, King's probably isn't it.

One honest caveat

No Tube line serves Denmark Hill directly; the overground and train timetable is your primary commute.
